Shoftim – Growing Through Deuteronomy
In this class we discuss the commandment “You shall be whole-hearted with God your God” (Deuteronomy 18:13).This verse comes immediately after the Torah warns against a whole list of various divination practices used by the other nations. Rashi comments are both succinct and full of faith: “Walk before Him wholeheartedly, put your hope in Him and do not attempt to investigate the future but whatever it may be that comes upon you accepted wholeheartedly and then you will be with Him and become His portion.” Coming right after the Torah’s warning against using magic, witchcraft, sorcery and necromancy to divine the future, we are instead encouraged to trust in God wholeheartedly. This of course does not mean to abdicate one’s gift of free choice, rather it means that after we have done our best we should trust that ultimately everything is for the good.
