Balaam who knew how to curse by connecting to a moment of nothingness or darkness between each pulsation of somethingness or light, found himself ineffective when trying to curse Israel. For Israel is connected to a sort of nothingness which paradoxically gives birth to light and all things. Yet, for Balaam this nothingness or darkness was perceived as a moral void in which he could control the forces of the universe to do his bidding. For God, as mentioned above, has made one corresponding to the other and each person has to decide on which side of the equation to stand – with darkness or with light, or as stated in the Torah: “This day, I call upon the heaven and the earth as witnesses [that I have warned you]: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. You shall choose life, so that you and your offspring will live” (Deuteronomy 30:19).
